Available Courses

 This course will be an introduction to role of and to provide a foundation for becoming a catechist. The student will be provided an introduction to the Church’s documents on the importance of catechesis, the source of what the Church teaches in catechesis as well as authority of the Church to teach.  As part of the process, the student should be become more enriched in their own faith as the student becomes more aware of the wealth and beauty of the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church.

 

This course has two goals.  The first is to help Catholic Catechists/Teachers/Lay Ecclesial Ministers know the Bible better for themselves.  The second is to help them become better teachers of the Bible. 

 The student will be provided an introduction to the Church’s documents on the sacraments, the source of what the Church teaches in the catechesis of the sacraments.  As part of the process, the student should become more enriched in their own faith as the student becomes more aware of the wealth and beauty of the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church and the sacraments

 This course is a comprehensive introduction to the sacred Liturgy, the Mass.  Drawing from various liturgical documents and other scholarly writings on the Liturgy, the course will seek to explain and expand the students’ present understanding of the purpose and the nature of the Liturgy. 

   In this course students will examine both the origin and goal of Catholic Morality.  This course attempts to deepen understanding of the meaning of the role of the Christian as sharer of Divine Life.  We will examine several current moral issues including abortion, gun control, euthanasia and capital punishment in light of Church teaching.  Students will learn and demonstrate effective means of relating these issues to youth.

 The purpose of this introductory course is to provide the students with a basic understanding of Pillars 1 and 3 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. 

 This course is a general introduction to the vocation of catechist in the Eastern Christian Church, including the gift, calling and formation (preparation) of the catechist and the history of and prototypical tasks of the apostolate. 

 

Introduction to the major dogmatic themes of Eastern theology expressed in the Nicene Creed, presented by the Church Fathers and liturgical texts.

Provides an understanding of “Tradition”, i.e., Scripture, Councils, Liturgy, Iconography, Church Fathers and Creeds as a living encounter with the Paraclete

 This course serves as an overview of the patristic understanding of the Old Testament as prophetic, focused on Christ; the role of the Septuagint and those texts regularly read or alluded to in worship in the Eastern Churches.

 

 


Survey of the history of the Eastern Church including the Apostolic Period, Ecumenical Councils, development of the Byzantine Tradition, division and reunification of the Churches, Eastern Catholics in the West and in the modern period. Includes a comparison of the Eastern and WesternCatholicChurches

 General overview of Christian worship from the Byzantine Tradition. Themes include faith expressed in worship, sanctification of time, yearly liturgical cycle, Divine Liturgy, the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments) and ideas for living liturgically
